Why this guide matters (primary keyword: content refresh strategy for ai overviews)

When AI Overviews appear for a query, they can reduce clicks to the top-ranking page. This guide shows four practical checks in Google Search Console that help you decide whether to refresh, rewrite, or leave a page alone. Use the decision tree to prioritise work on pages where an update will likely recover clicks.

Four Search Console checks to run

  1. Impressions trend: Is impressions volume steady or rising while clicks fall? If impressions rise but clicks fall, the SERP changed (likely an AI Overview).

  2. Position distribution: Are you hovering in positions 1–3, or slipping from 3–8? Pages in 8–20 can win a spot on page one with a focused refresh.

  3. Query overlap: Is the page serving queries the AI Overview answers? If the overview already provides the main answer, a rewrite or adding unique data is needed.

  4. Click yield by query: Which queries still drive clicks? Prioritise updates for queries with impressions and small CTR drops first.

Decision tree (short)

  • Impressions up + clicks down + position 1–3: test new title/meta and add a 40–60 word definition box.

  • Position 8–20 with good impressions: refresh the content with original data and stronger citation.

  • Queries fully answered by AI Overview: add unique datasets or a clear how-to that the overview doesn't provide.

  • Low impressions: deprioritise — create new content only if other signals (backlinks, related queries) suggest demand.

Examples & quick templates

  • Title test template: "[Target keyword] — What to do when Google shows an AI Overview"

  • Definition box: 40–60 words, single-sentence answer and source.

  • Update checklist: update date, add 1 original table/figure, check internal links, request indexing.
